Journey for Knowledge

September 10, 2009

Yea i would survive in the woods… Right Darin??

So we are all on the journey (i say journey because the destination should be unreachable) for knowledge. Regardless what you are searching for, you should always be trying to find better information. I have some really cool posts coming up but they are going to take some time. I want to give you a couple websites to keep you busy in the mean time.

Memoirs of a Strong Girl
This is the personal website of the new co-owner of Crossfit ATM. Her name is Jordan and when she wandered into my gym about 2 years ago she was weak, skinny, and a runner. She has shifted her perspective and is now committed to Crossfit and strength training. I love it!! It took many long hours of my whipping her with a barbell in the back yard but it finally worked and she is making me proud as the person to perpetuate Crossfit ATM. If you are local, you should go see her. She is an awesome coach and amazing person. She can cook pretty well too. ;-)
I guess i should mention her husband as well. He is the one that dragged her into the gym and is on his own journey as the other Co-owner of Crossfit ATM. Check out his blog here and the newest addition to the Brazos Valley is the BV Barbell Club

Crossfit Balboa
John is not the most politically correct guy on the planet but what he says makes sense, well, most of the time. If you are looking for a little sound nutrition advice along with an occasional laugh, check out Johns blog.

Daily OM
This is one of my favorites. It is a little touchy feely sensitive but i like that kind of stuff. It sends out a daily bit of wisdom for you to ponder.

Robb Wolf
Always an entertainer, the WOlfman gives great nutritional info and is not afraid to tell you when you are wrong and prove it as well.

Nicki Violetti
The beautiful goddess that has to put up with the Wolfman everyday. She has put together an amazing business blog posting what has worked for them at Crossfit Norcal and what hasn’t. Read and pay attention, she knows her shit.

The Biz
Jon Birch has a blog linked through Crossfit LA that posts some interesting thoughts on business. He has a differnt background than most of us and actually understands the business of Crossfit and wants to help everyone else be successful as well.

I didn’t link any training websites because that is what i am working on. I am going to sift through the ones i regularly visit and let you know the premise behind them from the horses mouth.
If you have any that you regularly visit, let me know and i will try to get them into the mix as well.

Enjoy!

Consistency in Programming

September 8, 2009

As Crossfiters we are overwhelmed by the amount of info and workouts posted on a daily basis. We usually tend to search and search every day for the perfect workout. Hours are wasted and not much is gained. Personally i have spent hours late into the night looking at countless sites and not come away with any knowledge and only slightly entertained.

I want to talk to you about getting on and staying on a program. There are several programs out there that i will review in the next couple days. Too many times i have heard of people doing the Crossfit Football workout on Monday, Catalyst on Tuesday, MaxFitUsa on Wednesday, rest on Thursday, .com on friday and the CF Invictus workout on Saturday (I will review all these and more). Does anyone else see the problem here? I am 100% sure that all these programs are very well thoughtout with a distinct direction they are going. In order to benefit from them you HAVE to stay on the program for more than 1 day, or 1 week. You need to let the program work. You can’t judge it from one workout you saw and tried.

I don’t want you to feel like i am talking down on those of you that have done or do the above. I have been there. I think it is the opportunity that has spoiled us. We have some many free workouts posted everday that we want to experience it all. I understand. But hear this: If you don’t have any goals, you are ok to wander through the forest of blogs and pick and choose your poison for the day but if you are serious about results i urge you to find a program that you feel will help you accomplish those results and STICK TO IT!!

Enough said, i will start to review some of my favorite programs in the next couple days. You will probably see some trends. They are not a coincidence.

Its raining Seminars, And this one is HUGE!

September 3, 2009

bbsummit
Imagine for a moment the opportunity to meet, and learn from the most influential people in your field. Fortunately we have taken the initaitive on this and put together an amazing event.

Jeremy had the great idea of getting all the people in the Crossfit Community that shaped the way he trains and runs his business. He and I have put together a fantastic event including people like, Robb Wolf, James Fitzgerald, Greg Everett, Aimee Anaya, Michael Rutherford and Nicki Violetti. This event will include each individual presenter presenting info that they think is pertenent to making the Crossfit community better. Among those topics are both business and training topics as well as some really cool discussions on the mental side of Crossfit.

To be honest with you, i am truly honered and excited to be a part of this. Looking back at when i started Crossfit it was the people listed above that i idolized. It is now my pleasure to bring them to the spotlight and help them get their knowledge to YOU!! This will be the first annual event and can only grow in size and stature as the Crossfit community grows. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you and can’t wait to get all the presenters together and see what topics come up that we didn’t even think about.

This is a very exciting day. I just heard that Michael Rutherford will be putting on a seminar to explain, among other things, his MEBB (Max Effort Black Box). This is something i have been waiting for for quite sometime. If you have the opportunity, i strongly suggest you jump all over this opportunity.

The seminar will be October 24th at Catalyst Athletics.
You can find more info and sign up here.

On another note: I finally snatched 100!! Have you reached your goals this year?
