Type A or Type B?

May 28, 2009

For those of you interested in the competition i posted about yesterday, check the tab at the top for an overview and rules.

What is your personality type?

If you don’t know let me be more specific. Which of the examples below do you identify with?

1)
Your classes start on time everyday and you have control of everything during each class. You have each class planned out and know how much time you have for each segment. The times are strictly adhered to. Class finishes with some organized stretching or cool down exercises. Your member info is highly organized and easily accessed. You spend hours everyday adjusting pictures and organizing your website. You make sure each and every post is perfect. You shower everyday and always wear underwear.

2)
Classes usually start a couple minutes late. They sometimes run over and are sometimes very short depending on the days workout. You are very creative with warmups and workouts. The class is usually followed with social time where you and your clients get to hang out and stretch but nothing organized. You just like to keep things low key. Your blog is fun to play with and you usually get a post up every couple days. The workout usually gets posted but if not no one panics. Showers are optional unless you worked out and didn’t go to the pool immediately afterwards. Shoes and underwear are also optional.

The above are two different training styles. Both are highly effective but drastically different. I think if you can identify which one you gravitate towards you can better identify how you can more effectively run your classes. Knowing yourself will really help give pick the format that best suites you.

Who would you rather train with? 1 or 2? Which one best describes your style? Thoughts?

I am a number two, but through business I have learned to take traits from number one.

So far it has worked out well for me, but the number 2 side keeps me on my toes as some things tend to get away from me.

I think what I will need as I grow is a Type A running the business end. Or at least dealing with the day to day.

On the training side what I’m doing seems to work.

Mostly type B but like Neil, am trying to utilize type A styles for the business side of things. I also take a shower every morning whether I need it or not. I also floss daily, not as in wear them.

Seriously, I like the community aspects of the type B post workout activities and as mentioned by someone have loosened up with the post workout “stuff” that people like to do. A few ghd situps, back extensions, burpees, rope climbs etc. I used to think it was a sign I wasn’t working them hard enough or delivering what they needed but I am trying to get over that, along with some of the AAWO workouts we used to do. Thoughts?

    Ron,
I am ok with the stuff after a workout. I don’t usually do it myself but how are you ever going to get good at something if you don’t have time to play with it. I know i have spent hours in the gym just fucking off and realize that it was time well spent.
Plus its what makes all this stuff so fun. Learning and using new skills is what its all about… O yea and fitness too.

I think I’m 80% Type A. Sometimes I get behind or I have a new person that will challenge my time management of the skills work. We’re not big enough yet to offer a Elements class. I seem to pull it off in the end, though we may run over by a few minutes. I tell you teaching is the best way to figure out your own style.

Hey Dutch, I wanted to let you know I just watched your Trainers Development dvd. I originally purchased the dvd to help me prepare for the upcoming Level 2 cert in Jacksonville but I have gotten so much more out of it. Your lecture on Intensity, and Programming have opened my eyes to the complex simplicity of CrossFit. I feel I now have a better idea of how to scale and why to scale. We scale a lot here but sometimes I miss the mark a bit. I hit the nail on the head with scaling for my fiance but with some of my conditioned athletes I can see where they have been pushing too hard even though we scale daily. I’m excited to take this new road. After watching it last night before our last class, I felt invigorated. I gave a lecture at the end of class and explained your concept on Intensity. You could almost see the weight being lifted off of the shoulders of the fitter athletes. I think it’s going to not only help their training and fitness but my fiance’s and mine as well. I originally wasn’t going to attend your seminar due to low funds but I am going to make every effort to get to this seminar.

One question, and please excuse my ignorance, when you discussed the two different types of training modes for the wod being either Time or Task on the dvd the definition between the two was edited out. Can you briefly discuss the difference again. I know they went over this in my Level 1 cert but I forgot what they are. If you can just give me an example, i.e. Cindy is a Time or Task oriented goal? Fran is a ? If you’re short on time and can just point me in the direction of a CF article or someone’s discussion of this topic, that would be fine.

Thanks again for the info and a quality dvd. Well worth the money and then some. Best of luck on the Games. BTW, watched you on “Every Second Counts” too. Great job.

    Polo,
Time oriented workout = Cindy, Mary, FGB… Anything with a mandated time. The work is up to you and is known as your score.

Task oriented workout= Fran, elizabeth, diane, helen… Anything that is done for time. The work is set, the time is up to you.

    Does this help?
